Herschel Brown’s life is rooted in a legacy of service and community leadership. His father, a pioneering businessman, owned multiple successful enterprises and was among the first Black men in the area to secure a Small Business Administration loan, setting a powerful example of determination and vision. These early influences instilled in Herschel a strong work ethic and a lifelong commitment to helping others.A graduate of OKC’s Northwest Classen High School, Herschel earned a Bachelor of Science in Zoology from the University of Oklahoma, followed by his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. He completed a competitive emergency medicine residency at Emory University in Atlanta, later practicing there before continuing his career in Texas at Harris Methodist Hospital and UT Southwestern Medical Center–Parkland, where he served as a Clinical Assistant Professor.&nbsp;<img src="https://run.imgix.net/cb4fd355-3eb0-460e-9843-76aa57bca3d5/7627b8e5-3d9c-46d6-af13-9865dac7ac37/7627b8e5-3d9c-46d6-af13-9865dac7ac37.jpg?ixlib=js-3.8.0&amp;bri=0&amp;con=0&amp;sat=0&amp;high=0&amp;shad=0&amp;usm=0&amp;rect=208%2C484%2C3055%2C3992&amp;w=1500" alt="" caption="" align="left" alignwidth="40" tiltdirection="left" variant="framed">Answering the call to service in his hometown, Dr. Brown returned to Oklahoma City, driven by a deep sense of responsibility to his community. At OU Health, he serves as an attending physician and educator, dedicating over 30 years to caring for patients and mentoring future doctors. His experiences witnessing healthcare disparities have fueled his purpose to advocate for families in need. In the House, he will champion healthcare access and affordability - protecting Medicare and Medicaid access for Oklahomans.&nbsp;&nbsp;Beyond medicine, he is an active leader at Voice of Hope Church, a supporter of education, and a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Alongside his wife, Doris, he is a proud father of four. Too many Oklahomans with mental health challenges are left behind because funding is diverted from these critical services. I will fight to restore and increase funding for community mental-health centers, crisis intervention, school-based services and accessible outpatient treatment. Every Oklahoman deserves timely, compassionate care - no one should be denied mental health treatment because of budget constraints.

Mental Health Treatment

Dr. Brown is committed to bringing better health care to District 99 by increasing access for every resident. I will work to lower insurance premiums and reduce co-pays so families can afford quality care.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Healthcare Access &amp; Affordability&nbsp;

&nbsp;Despite a statewide vote enshrining Medicaid expansion into Oklahoma’s Constitution, radical conservatives in the state government are trying to kill it. In the State House, I’ll fight to secure sustainable funding for Oklahoma’s Medicaid program (SoonerCare) to protect the most vulnerable.

Oklahoma’s criminal justice system must protect public safety while delivering equal justice for all. Right now the system is broken. I will fight to modernize policing and courts with evidence-based training, transparency and accountability. Investing in addiction treatment, mental health services and reentry programs that reduce recidivism are central to that work.&nbsp;

I will fight to increase school funding so every child has access to a safe classroom, up-to-date materials and the support they need to succeed in the modern economy.&nbsp;
